Living Turf Roof System

“what could be more natural than a log cabin with a living turf roof?”

Although seldom seen these days, the living turf roof has been around for centuries. Man-made roofing systems put the emphasis on speed of build, cost and minimum maintenance. However, for the more discerning, the grass roof is geared towards building a property within its natural environment providing camouflage amongst beautiful rural landscapes.

There are many variations of the "living grass roof", most of which are applied to flat or slightly sloping roofs with a pitch of less than 10 degrees. Although this type of roof lends itself to easier management, extra consideration should be taken in relation to water retention, the waterproof membrane and the excessive weight. Rural Accommodations developed a groundbreaking system in 1998 suitable for a pitched roof and over the years have enhanced the system in order to combat some of the pitfalls. There are several issues which need to be addressed should you consider a living grass roof, these can be separated into three distinct categories:

  1. Building Control & Legislation
  2. The grass drying out too quickly
  3. Retaining the nutrients for continued growth.
